Cheltenham Festival news - AP McCoy statue to be unveiled at the Festival

Cheltenham racecourse announced this week that they would be immortalising legendary jockey, AP McCoy in bronze, with a life-size statue taking pride of place outside the Best Mate Plaza at the north entrance of the historic venue.

Regarded by most as the greatest jockey to ever jump a fence, McCoy clocked up over 4,300 winners during a professional career which spanned nearly a quarter of a century. He claimed the British Champion Jockey title on 20 occasions and celebrated in the Festival winners’ enclosure at Prestbury Park 31 times, including two Gold Cup triumphs in 1997 and 2012.

The County Antrim native won the Grand National on Don’t Push It in 2010 and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year later that same year. His horse racing achievements were recognised by the Queen on several occasions during his career, but soon after his retirement in 2015, he received a knighthood for services to the sport he loves.

McCoy welcomed the news with his usual stoical, dead-pan approach - remarking that he only thought important figures got a statue when they were dead, that it would be a nice place for the bird to sit and admitting his fear that the statue would capture the extra weight he has put on since settling into retirement.

Despite these tongue-in-cheek comments, McCoy will be in attendance on the first day of the Festival, when the statue is unveiled before the racing action gets under way. Whether we will see a more emotional response from the knight of the realm when he goes face-to-face with his bronze doppelganger is unlikely, but it’s sure to be a wonderful occasion when the statue takes it rightful place at the home of National Hunt racing on March 14th.
