History beckons for Henderson as Might Bite backed into firm favouritism

Jonathan Vine in Friday 16 Mar 2018

After a strong wave of support throughout the morning, it looks more and more certain Might Bite will go to post as the firm favourite to win the 2018 Gold Cup.

In the days and weeks building up to the race, Might Bite’s supporters wavered slightly, fearing the ground may have gone against the King of Kempton. Our Duke and Native River - known lovers of testing conditions - had drawn alongside Might Bite at the head of the market, with Jessica Harrington’s Irish raider even leapfrogging Nicky Henderson’s charge earlier in the week.

Yet, on the morning of National Hunt racing’s most prestigious contest, Might Bite has been backed off the board.

Henderson’s quirky nine-year-old started the day level with Our Duke as 9/2 joint-favourites, with Native River lurking around the 5/1 mark. Now, with little more than two hours before the off, Might Bite has been slashed into 7/2 favouritism by Ladbrokes, as Our Duke and Native River drift out to 11/2.

No trainer has ever claimed the Champion Hurdle, the Champion Chase and the Gold Cup at the same Festival. Victories for Buveur D’Air and Altior earlier in the week pushed Nicky Henderson to the brink of history and Might Bite is being backed like the only possible victor.

Behind the leading candidates, Definitly Red has been clipped into a single-figure price for the first time. Ladbrokes list Brian Ellison’s stayer as a 9/1 shot, just ahead of Killultagh Vic and Road To Respect.

Current Gold Cup Betting with Ladbrokes (Odds accurate to 1:00pm)
7/2 Might Bite, 11/2 Native River, Our Duke, 9/1 Definitly Red, 10/1 Killultagh Vic, Road To Respect, 16/1 Bar
