The top five nightclubs in Cheltenham - Best places for a night out during Festival week

Dance the night away during the Cheltenham Festival.

You'll be wanting to celebrate your victory over the bookmakers at the Festival and we've picked out the five best nightclubs to spend your winnings in.

If you've landed a big win following our Cheltenham Festival tips, a post-racing, and whilst the pubs and bars of Cheltenham might be enough for some of you, others will be desperate to bust some moves on the dance floor. There are a fair few nightclubs in the town - they’re always kept busy thanks to the abundance of university students - but come March, suited and booted ladies and gents take over. It can get pretty packed, so it’s advisable to put names on guest-lists if you can, that way you’ll definitely get in.  Here are five to choose where to groove...

Thirteen Degrees

Thirteen Degrees is probably the classiest club in Cheltenham, branding itself as “an independent boutique nightspot.” Think patterned wallpaper, chandeliers, mood lighting, and lots of nooks and crannies to retreat to. There are 5 bars across 3 floors within the grand Georgian building, so you should be able to get a drink with ease, and find a space that suits your mood. Sip on a cocktail, enjoy a bit of live music, and dance the night away. Oh, and if you head to Thirteen’s sister cocktail bar on Regent Street beforehand – Six Degrees of Separation – you can get both priority and complimentary entry to the club when you flash your bar receipt.

The 21 Club

The 21 Club is synonymous with the Cheltenham Festival; it’s actually the property of racehorse owner/trainer Richard Davies.  Every night during the March meeting, the club is filled with the who’s who of the race world – jockeys, trainers, owners and royalty alike – and they’ve hosted the Gold Cup winner’s party for the last 10 years(!). Hidden in the basements on Regent Street, it has a capacity of 300, and as a result, always ends up one in one out.  If you’re a smoker, there’s a great covered courtyard, which is heated and has its own bar. Perfect.

Subtone is Cheltenham’s trusty late night venue; be prepared, it’s open until 6am! Located on the promenade, there are 5 bars and 5 vibes, so there’s a little something to keep everyone entertained until the early hours of the morning. The club has a Piano Bar where you can grab a drink whilst a live pianist tinkers away at the keys – sounds rather sophisticated – but the dance floor, ‘Bongo Bar’ and ‘Cocktail Bar’ are all in the basement. You can buy some extra energy in the form of food in the ‘Cafe’; you will probably need it!

Aloha! Get Tiki-tastic at Cheltenham's exotic nightspot! You can escape the real world at Kukui on Bath Road; the club boasts an attractive cocktail bar and club all on one floor, so you can hula to your heart’s content. Hawaiian shirts are optional, but make sure you get a sharing cocktail that’s served up in a giant shell; you’re supplied with super long straws to slurp it up.  Drink, dance, relax and enjoy your passport to paradise at Kukui.

2 Pigs

The 2 Pigs on Church Street, just off the High Street, is one of Cheltenham’s longest running alternative venues. It showcases lots of live music as well as club nights, with a more chilled out, friendly atmosphere. Not one to follow trends, you won’t find a fancy cocktail bar here; it’s all about rum, JD & Coke, Jager-bombs and bottles of Desperado’s. There are two floors playing indie, rock and metal, and there’s a large courtyard out the back for when it all gets a bit too hot and sweaty. There are often special nights dedicated to racing during Cheltenham Festival week, so keep an eye out for details as it gets closer to the time, but for now just start practicing singing Nirvana as loud as you can!
