2019 Champion Chase entries – Altior tops list of 22 initial entries for day two showpiece

Altior leaps a fence at Sandown earlier in the season.

Altior tops the list of initial Champion Chase entries released today, with Philip Kirby’s Lady Button’s one of 21 horses who could line up in opposition.

Altior’s reign of dominance has continued throughout the first half of the season, with victories in the Tingle Creek and the Desert Orchid Chase helping Nicky Henderson’s charge extend his unbeaten record into a 15th race. William Hill is the only bookmaker currently offering 1/2 on the three-time Festival winner, but that hasn’t stopped Altior’s rivals entering the countries’ premier two mile chase.

Footpad was the best novice in training last term, but Willie Mullins charge has suffered two straight defeats since returning to action in the autumn. Douvan has lost his race against time and won’t aid Mullins’ battle against Altior, but Footpad will likely be joined by several of his County Carlow stablemates, with Min, Great Field and Un De Sceaux all thrown into the mix.

Paul Nicholls has given Politologue the option to drop back to two miles, while Alan King will be hopeful Sceaux Royal can continue his good seasonal form. Saint Calvados will fly the flag for Harry Whittington, with Colin Tizzard’s only contender being 2017 runner-up, Fox Norton.

The most romantic entry in the Champion Chase must be Phil Kirby’s Lady Buttons, who has gone from strength to strength this term. A mare is yet to triumph in the Queen Mother, but Lady Button’s looks set to take her chance on, what will be, her Cheltenham Festival debut.

The Peter Fahy-trained Castlegrace Paddy looks set to take his chance, along with recent Leopardstown victor, Simply Ned. Other notable Irish entrants include Henry De Bromhead’s Petit Mouchoir, 2017 winner Special Tiara and Enda Bolger’s Ballyoisin.

*Current Champion Chase (13/3/19) betting with William Hill*
1/2 Altior, 8/1 Footpad, 10/1 Min, 16/1 Sceaux Royal, Un De Sceaux, 20/1 Great Field, 25/1 Politologue, 33/1 Bar
