2019 Champion Hurdle betting news – Buveur D’Air cements place at head of betting with superb Fighting Fifth performance

Jonathan Vine in News 7 Dec 2018
Barry Geraghty celebrates atop Buveur D'Air after winning the Champion Hurdle in 2018.

We take a look at the 2019 Champion Hurdle and how the early months of the season have shaped the ante-post betting for the feature race on day one of the Cheltenham Festival.

When Gordon Elliott announced Samcro would be pointed at the Champion Hurdle, last year’s Ballymore winner leapfrogged Buveur D’Air at the head of the betting. The two faced off in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle at the start of December and it was the reigning two-time Cheltenham winner who proved his supremacy, handing Samcro a healthy beating.

Buveur D’Air was instantly installed as the clear favourite to win the Champion Hurdle for the third time in 2019. Race sponsors Unibet currently make Nicky Henderson’s charge the even-money market leader, with Samcro drifting out to 8/1.

Willie Mullins’ Laurina sits closest to Buveur D’Air in the betting. The 9/2 second-favourite is yet to run so far this season and could be rerouted towards the Mares’ Hurdle if things don’t go to plan. Last year’s runner-up, Melon sits alongside Samcro on 8/1. As does Apple’s Jade, although the Mares’ Hurdle looks a certain target for Gordon Elliott’s star.

Min, who has spent the last 18 months over fences, holds quotes of 14/1 for the Champion Hurdle with Unibet, with Supasundae an overlooked contender on 16/1. Summerville Boy drifted back to 20/1 after finishing fourth of five in the Fighting Fifth, with Draconian, Global Citizen, If The Cap Fits and Sharjah sharing the same price as last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner.

*Current Champion Hurdle (12/3/19) betting with Unibet*
Evens Buveur D’Air, 9/2 Laurina, 8/1 Melon, Samcro, Apple’s Jade, 14/1 Min, 16/1 Supasundae, 20/1 Bar

Odds correct as of 7/12/18
