2019 Champion Hurdle entries – 32 rivals lined up for crack at Cheltenham king Buveur D’Air

Verdana Blue (right) hands Buveur D'Air (left) his first defeat in three years in the International Hurdle.

The initial entries for the Champion Hurdle have been revealed Thursday 10th January, with 32 rivals lined up to take a crack at two-time Cheltenham champion, Buveur D’Air.

It seemed certain that Buveur D’Air would be making it three Champion Hurdle victories in a row, after crushing Samcro on his reappearance in the Fighting Fifth. However, team Henderson came crashing back down to earth at Kempton, where Buveur D’Air was surprisingly beaten by stablemate Verdana Blue and that result will have filled the defending champion’s rivals with hope.

Laurina headlines the list of 32 entered against Buveur D’Air and Willie Mullins unbeaten mare was clipped in the betting today, coming into 3/1 second-favouritism with William Hill. Laurina will likely be joined in the Champion Hurdle by several of her stablemates, with Sharjah and Melon amongst the nine entries from Ireland’s Champion Trainer.

Verdana Blue and Brain Power look likely to accompany stablemate Buveur D’Air, having claimed impressive victories in high profile races over Christmas. Tom George has given last year’s Supreme winner, Summerville Boy the option of the Champion Hurdle, should he recover in time from a broken leg. Other notable British entrants include Iain Jardine’s Bedrock, If The Cap Fits, Global Citizen and Mohaayed, who won the County Hurdle last year for Dan Skelton.

Gordon Elliott has left Apple’s Jade and Samcro in the entries, but the chances of either lining up in the Champion Hurdle look slim at best. Elliott’s small team will likely be led by last year’s third, Mick Jazz and former Supreme winner, Labaik. Jessica Harrington’s Supasundae looks a lively outsider to be respected, as does Espoir D’Allen, who has impressed for Gavin Cromwell’s yard this season.

*Current Champion Hurdle (12/3/19) betting with William Hill*
6/4 Buveur D'Air, 3/1 Laurina, 9/1 Melon, 10/1 Sharjah, 12/1 Apple's Jade, Verdana Blue, 14/1 Brain Power, Samcro, 16/1 Supasundae, 20/1 Bar
