2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup news – Presenting Percy and Native River headline initial entries

A view of the runners at Cheltenham.

43 of National Hunt racing’s finest stayers were thrown into the Gold Cup picture today, as the initial entries for the Cheltenham Festival’s main event were revealed on Wednesday 9th January.

Today saw the initial entries for the Cheltenham Gold Cup revealed to the public for the first time and punters can look forward to a mouth-watering renewal. Last year’s hero, Native River tops the field in terms of rating, but Colin Tizzard’s defending champion looks set to face a talent-packed field of rivals on the third Friday in March.

Surprise King George winner, Clan Des Obeaux currently sits at a single-figure price to triumph at Cheltenham. He’s joined in the entries by fellow Paul Nicholls’ trained Black Corton, with Politologue dropping out of the running. Nicky Henderson’s challenge will be spearheaded by Might Bite, who has disappointed thus far this season. Terrefort, Altior and Top Notch also feature in the initial entries, but it’s doubtful whether any will accompany last year’s runner-up in the final field.

Native River will likely be joined by two of his stablemate, with Thistlecrack and Elegant Escape both entered into the Gold Cup picture by Colin Tizzard. Other notable British entrants include Bristol De Mai, Definitly Red, Ms Parfois, Willoughby Court and Mark Bradstock’s former winner Coneygree.
Presenting Percy tops the current ante-post betting, with Ladbrokes quoting a top price of 4/1. While Pat Kelly’s charge has been conspicuous by his absence, Kemboy leapt into Gold Cup reckoning when winning the Savills Chase over Christmas and he’s the second-highest Irish entrant in the current betting.

Willie Mullins boasts the highest number of entries in this year’s Gold Cup, with no fewer than eleven of his horses thrown into the running. Along with Kemboy, Al Boum Photo and Bellshill would be the primary challengers from the Irish Champion Trainer’s yard, with Footpad lurking as a lively outsider.

Shattered Love and The Storyteller look to be the sole representatives from Gordon Elliott’s superpower operation. Last year’s third and fourth placed runners, Anibale Fly and Road To Respect will both have another crack at the Gold Cup, with Jessica Harrington handing Sizing John the chance to defend the crown he won in 2017, having missed last year’s meeting through injury.

*Current Cheltenham Gold Cup (15/3/19) betting with Ladbrokes*
4/1 Presenting Percy, 5/1 Native River, 6/1 Kemboy, 7/1 Clan Des Obeaux, 12/1 Road To Respect, Thistlecrack, 14/1 Al Boum Photo, 16/1 Might Bite, Bristol De Mai, Bellshill, 20/1 Bar
