Paddy Power unveil 25 foot Fearless Jockey statue at Cheltenham

Paddy Power have unveiled a 25 foot statue at Cheltenham which celebrates female jockeys with it's plinth reading: “Some jockeys have big balls. Others are just great jockeys”.

Bookmaker Paddy Power have unveiled a huge 25 foot (7.5 metre) statue which is entitled ‘Fearless Jockey’ at the Cheltenham Festival, which celebrates women jockeys in one of the very few elite sporting events in which men and women compete as equals.

The statue is based upon a 3D body scan of leading rider Rachael Blackmore, with the statue celebrating female jockeys, and it is a tip to the iconic ‘Fearless Girl’ of New York.

The statue stands opposite the Centaur entrance with an inscription on the plinth reading “Some jockeys have big balls. Others are just great jockeys”.

While 2019 could hail the year that Blackmore takes the title of racing’s first ever female professional jump jockey champions, it was just 50 years ago that women were banned from riding in jump races. However, times are clearly changing, with 83% of racing fans believing it does not matter what gender a jockey is in a survey commissioned by Paddy Power.

Speaking at the unveiling on Monday, Blackmore said: “To win the championship is every jockey’s dream. Being female no longer comes into it. The same goes for riding a winner here this week”.

“When we walk out of the weighing room during the Cheltenham Festival, we all walk out shoulder to shoulder to compete as equals, regardless of which changing room we used.”

‘Fearless Jockey’ will form part of a wider campaign by bookie Paddy Power to celebrate and encourage gender equality in racing, the sport of kings and queens.

A spokesperson for Paddy Power added: “While our Fearless Jockey celebrates the bravery of all riders competing on equal terms this week, if Rachael rides her first winner a Cheltenham, I’ll be the one blazing a trail – back across the Irish Sea with lighter pockets”.

“Thankfully the head honchos in Cheltenham have chosen to forgive us the sins of our past and agreed work with us on creating this epic statue. Plus, keeping a 25ft tall statue under the radar may have been a stretch, even for us.”
