2019 Champion Chase tips – 5/1 shot shouldn’t be dismissed in ante-post Cheltenham Festival betting

Tom Dodd in Tips 7 Dec 2018
Footpad jumps the last on his way to claiming Arkle glory last year.

RacingTips' and CheltenhamFestival.net’s chief editor, Tom Dodd takes a look through the early betting for the Champion Chase and provides readers with his tips.

Ladies’ Day at the Cheltenham Festival is headlined by the Queen Mother Champion Chase, one of the most looked-forward-to races of the entire Festival. Tom Dodd casts his eye through the ante-post betting for the main event on day two of the Cheltenham Festival and has come up with his betting suggestions.

2019 Champion Chase Ante-Post Tip

Fourteen straight wins and three successes at the last three Cheltenham Festivals marks Altior down as one of the greats and picking holes in his form is nigh on impossible, but the reigning champion is a year older and there were minor signs in last year’s Champion Chase that he could be vulnerable to a real ‘speedster’.

A ‘speedster’ is exactly what FOOTPAD is and although we must address his poor start to the season at Naas it has enabled us to get a much larger price for the Champion Chase. Willie Mullins’ star chaser took all before him last season, winning all five chase starts which included a demolition job in the Arkle at the Cheltenham Festival.

His pace and slick jumping were his key attributes last season, attributes that deserted him on his seasonal reappearance which was simply too bad to be true. We can forgive him one bad run and expect Footpad to get his season back on track over Christmas to set up the clash with Altior in March we all want to see.

Back Footpad at 5/1 with Coral for the Champion Chase.
