Discorama had a punishing race in the National Hunt at Cheltenham and I doubt whether he will have had enough time to recover fully. Chris’s Dream is a stayer who seems to be a little below Grade One standard and Getabird is an erratic, overrated horse I’ve never been able to trust.

A Plus Tard’s demolition job in the Close Brothers’ Handicap at Cheltenham was one of the performances of the week and there’s no doubting Henry De Bromhead’s charge is of Grade One quality. However, his trainer said during the build-up to Cheltenham that switching to a left-handed course would suit best and I think it was rather unfair of the handicapper to thrust A Plus Tard’s rating beyond DELTA WORK’S, who has barely put a foot wrong this term and is fancied to get back to winning ways.

Last season’s Pertemps Final winner won his first three starts over the larger obstacles, a sequence which included two Grade One triumphs. Delta Work beat another of this season’s most impressive novices, Le Richebourg in the Drinmore at Fairyhouse, before stepping up to three miles to comfortably win the Neville Hotel’s at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Davy Russell’s mount was positioned perfectly behind Topofthegame and Santini approaching the last in the RSA at Cheltenham and I was half-expecting Delta Work to pounce. Sadly, for Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown, the six-year-old just failed to see out the trip, passing the post three lengths back in third.

There was, however, no disgrace in Delta Work’s performance that day, he was just beaten by two classy animals. Elliott’s charge ran well in the Grade One novices hurdle at the Festival here last year and should relish the quicker ground conditions on his return to Punchestown. I think Delta Work is the best horse in the race.
