The Queen Mother Champion Chase is a Grade 1 race over two miles and is the highlight on day 2 of the Cheltenham Festival. This is the most prestigious prize in racing for two mile chasers and regularly attracts the best horses from Britain and Ireland.

Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson have each won the race six times. Nicholls winners include Master Minded (2008 and 2009) while Henderson trained dual winners Sprinter Sacre (2013 and 2016) and Altior (2018 and 2019). Badsworth Boy (1983 – 1985) remains the only horse in history to win the race three times. Champion Chase Odds 2023 make Henderson’s Shishkin favourite to defeat the Willie Mullins trained duo, Energumene and Chacun Pour Soi.

Champion Chase Odds and Entries 2023

This year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase is being billed as one of the greatest duels in the history of the sport. The previously unbeaten Shishkin and Energumene, winners of the Cheltenham Arkle and Irish Arkle Chases respectively, clashed at Ascot in January. Energumene took the field along at a steady pace and still had Shishkin two lengths adrift over the last fence. His lead was gradually eroded on the run-in with Shishkin eventually winning by a length.

The Champion Chase odds suggest that the form will be upheld at Cheltenham with the uphill finish likely to play to Shishkin’s strengths. Nicky Henderson’s star will be aiming for a third consecutive festival victory after the Supreme Novices Hurdle in 2020 and the Arkle Trophy last year. His season has not been entirely straight forward as he did not start to please Henderson until well into December, returning to win the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton after Christmas.

Willie Mullins stands between Henderson and a record seventh Champion Chase winner. He saddles Energumene and last year’s beaten favourite Chacun Pour Soi. Mullins has made it clear that he regards Chacun Pour Soi as the better of the two but he has yet to produce his best on this side of the Irish Sea. He probably over-raced last year and was unable to quicken in the closing stages, finishing a length and a half third to Put The Kettle On and Nube Negra.

All three hold entries in this year’s race, although Put The Kettle On has not managed to produce the same level of form since. Nube Negra won the Shloer Chase from Politologue in November but ran very flat next time at Sandown. Trainer Dan Skelton believes the secret is to have the horse fresh and he has not raced since early December.

Champion Chase News

Two years’ ago the Queen Mother Champion Chase rather fell apart with first Altior and then Chacun Pour Soi withdrawn at the last minute. That appeared to leave odds-on favourite Defi Du Seuil with the race at his mercy but he ran well below form and it was Politologue who seized the opportunity. The racing world will be hoping that there are no such late dramas this year with Shishkin facing a two-pronged attack from Ireland’s Energumene and Chacun Pour Soi.

Shishkin has been the subject of sustained support in the Champion Chase odds and would be one of the biggest losers for bookmakers at the festival. Henderson scoffs at the idea of him being regarded as a banker bet and has the utmost respect for both of the Mullins horses. The way Chacun Pour Soi bounced back to form at Leopardstown certainly commands respect, although his previous visits to England have been uninspiring.

Dan Skelton is more than hopeful that Nube Negra can get in the shake-up after going so close a year ago. He is one of several horses that the trainer has kept off the racecourse since December, determined to have them fresh and well for the big occasion. It is worth remembering that he had not raced for 323 days prior to beating Altior in the 2020 Desert Orchid Chase.

Envoi Allen has an alternative engagement in the Ryanair Chase and his form suggests that he would struggle to lay up with these top-notch two-milers. Funambule Sivola won the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury for Venetia Williams but would need to produce a career-best to feature here. The scene is set for possibly the highest quality Champion Chase in history.
