Telmesomethinggirl ridden by Rachael Blackmore goes on to win The Parnell Properties MaresÕ NovicesÕ Hurdle goes on to win during day three of the Cheltenham Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse.

The Mares Novices Hurdle is a Grade 2 race confined to fillies and mares over an extended two miles at the Cheltenham Festival. It was introduced in 2016 as The Dawn Run Mares Novices Hurdle in honour of the Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.

The race was monopolised by Trainer Willie Mullins for the first five seasons; Lumini (2016), Let’s Dance (2017), Laurina (2018), Eglantine Du Seuil (2019) and Concertista (2020). His domination was halted, temporarily at least, by Henry De Bromhead’s Telmesomethinggirl in 2021. The first three winners were all heavily-backed favourites but Eglantine Du Seuil sprang a 50-1 surprise. The Mares Novices Hurdle Odds 2022 has the Mullins-trained duo Dinoblue and Brandy Love disputing favouritism.

Mares Novices Hurdle Odds and Entries 2022

This race has been successfully farmed by Willie Mullins so it is no surprise that he is responsible for one-third of the runners at the latest declaration stage. It has not been entirely smooth sailing for the Closutton trainer though as ante-post favourite Allegorie De Vassy will miss the race due to a minor set-back.

She had defeated stable companion Brandy Love in the Grade 3 Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse in January. The result may well have been different had the runner-up not given away an enormous amount of ground by continuously jumping out to her left. Switching from a right-hand track to a left-hand track should help to nullify the effect of this tendency.

It is not yet certain which of the Mullins runners will start favourite in the Mares Novices Hurdle betting odds. Dinoblue made a very impressive debut in the JP McManus colours at Clonmel to win by 15 lengths and comes here with a tall reputation. She jumped like a seasoned professional that day so Mullins is not concerned that her lack of experience may catch her out.

Grangee fell at the second last in Allegorie De Vassy’s race and had previously performed creditably behind Mighty Potter at Leopardstown. Statuaire could also come into the equation despite a poor effort in a first-time hood on her latest start. She had edged out My Mate Mozzie at Fairyhouse in the Grade 1 Royal Bond Novice Hurdle in November on good ground.

The main opposition to Mullins comes from Gordon Elliott’s Party Central, the winner of three of her four races over hurdles. She idled in front when beating Say Goodbye at Leopardstown in a valuable handicap last month. The best of the home team could be Sidney Banks winner Elle Est Belle, although trainer Dan Skelton may decide to bypass Cheltenham in favour of Aintree.

Mares Novices Hurdle News

The Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle could hold the key to this race, despite the winner not being involved. Opinion was split three ways after that race as to which mare emerged as the most likely to win at Cheltenham. Allegorie De Vassy was initially trimmed in the ante-post betting and Brandy Love pushed out but many observers felt the runner-up would have won had she kept a straight course.

Bryan Cooper rode Grangee who fell at the second last and he is convinced that his mare would have beaten both of them. Willie Mullins does not necessarily agree with Cooper but he respects his opinion as the man on top. It could be irrelevant if Dinoblue is as good as connections think she is. The chestnut mare has been the subject of sustained support since her easy Clonmel victory to challenge Brandy Love for favouritism.

Party Central took advantage of a lenient handicap mark to scoop a big prize at Leopardstown for Gordon Elliott. That race had been won in previous seasons by subsequent Cheltenham festival winners Heaven Help Us and Black Tears. She remains a solid third favourite in the Mares Novices Hurdle Odds.

Love Envoi won a Grade 2 at Lingfield but trainer Harry Fry was not convinced that she should run at Cheltenham, certainly not if the going is fast. That leaves a rather depleted British challenge for a race they are yet to win. Dan Skelton does have options besides Elle Est Belle including Lingfield runner-up Nurse Susan and the consistent Get A Tonic.
