Tuesday - Champion Day

Tuesday 12th March, 2019
Days, weeks and months of anticipation finally come to an end during the middle week of March, as the Cheltenham Festival finally gets underway. Day one at Prestbury Park is known as Champions Day, with four Grade One prizes set to be handed out in front of a raucous crowd of National Hunt Racing fans on Tuesday afternoon.

We begin with two thrilling novice contests, starting with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, a two mile contest with a particularly strong record of producing brilliant horses. The finest two mile chasers of their generation will then fight it out in the Arkle Challenge Trophy – a race named after the greatest horse ever jump a fence, a three-time winner of the Gold Cup during the 1960s.

Once the winner of the Ultima Handicap Chase has finished lapping up the applause in the parade ring, the runners in the first Championship race of the Festival take to the Prestbury Park turf. Only the finest hurdler will be good enough to claim Champion Hurdle glory and join the likes of Hatton’s Grace, Persian War and Istabraq – all three-time winners of the Champion Hurdle - on the illustrious roll of honour.

Mares then take centre-stage in the Mares’ Hurdle, a race which Ireland’s top trainer, Willie Mullins has dominated since it was added to the festivities in the mid-2000s. The historic National Hunt Chase follows, before the Close Brothers’ Handicap Chase brings the curtain down on Champions Day at the Cheltenham Festival.
